Farming & Land Management

Welcome to Camas Acres! We are a young couple starting our farming journey, committed to living in right relationship with the land and our community. Paul runs a land management company (Fire and Hoof LLC) offering consulting and contracting services in farming, forestry, and agritourism. This can include anything from pasture management, fuel reductions and thinning, silvopasture conversion, orchard planning, installation and maintenance, earthworks and water/drainage management, or agritourism planning.

We are in the process of building our farming business and lifestyle, and are currently focused on establishing a grass-fed and finished beef program.

Land Management Services

We can help you design and construct swales, ponds, weirs, and terraces to help you increase water infiltration, improve your soil, and reduce erosion. These terraces or swales can be used to plant row crops on contour, and modeled to homestead or commercial scale. Our focus is on long-term resiliency while we have diesel machinery available to do this work quickly and efficiently!

Fire Prevention/Fuels Management

Our company offers consultation and contracting services to help reduce and manage the risk of wildfire on your property. This can include thinning, brushing, or clearing and defensible space installation. We can also help landowners pursue restorative or prescribed fire as a land management tool, and can position you and your property for success in this endeavor!

Rotational grazing can significantly increase your land's productivity and carrying capacity, and we can help you get there! By decreasing your paddock size and increasing your frequency of moves, you mimic the natural pattern of massive herds of ungulates moving across the plains, with months passing between nibbling on the same patch of grass.

Farm Products

Forested Idaho Pasture Pigs

We are currently offering young hogs as luau/roasting pigs at $4/lb hanging weight. These pigs will finish off between 60-120 lbs in June, July and August. They will be processed at Holy Cow Butcher Shop and can be processed as a whole hog or cut and wrapped for your freezer at $4.75/lb (slightly extra for smoked/cured meats)

We are also doing a farm fundraiser this year to help get our cattle herd purchased, a raffle of an entire hog for your freezer! This will be a full-grown hog at about 9 months of age, finishing off around 160lbs. Between now and July 4th we will be selling raffle tickets at $10/ticket or $80 for 10 tickets. We will physically deliver a ticket to you, and place it into our drawing jar. The drawing will occur on July 4th and we will announce the winner via email. Your whole hog will be available for pickup within a week of July 4th at Holy Cow Butcher Shop in Holley, OR.

Grass-finished Beef and Homestead Cows

We are beginning a cattle herd and a grass-fed beef operation with a few goals in mind. Our goal is to develop a small-framed, resilient, mixed-breed herd that will thrive on grass only, produce cattle with potential for meat and milk production, and be docile enough to serve as family cows. The heart of this program is the purchase of an American Milking Devon bull, named Luke. Pictured to the left here is his mother, Elsa. AMD cattle are triple purpose, heritage cattle that were selected for beef, milk, and oxen, as well as docility, ease of calving, and weight gain on natural forage. They were the number one oxen used on the Oregon Trail. This breed is listed as endangered with the livestock conservancy, but we were lucky enough to find a young bull on the West Coast. We will be crossing him with a carefully selected assortment of cows including Dexter, Devon (the modern "beef only" version of AMD's), and our family milk cow, Harper- a jersey/ beef shorthorn cross. Our hope is to offer grass-finished beef shares starting in 2025, as well as family dual-purpose/homestead cows.

Meet BamBam! He is a pure-bred Devon steer joining us from Tabula Rasa Farms in Carlton. Devons, or "Beef Devons" are the modern version of an American Milking Devon. Like so many heritage breeds, they faced pressure to specialize in high performance beef or dairy for industrial production, losing many of their "heritage" traits. BamBam will honor our philosophy of "one bad day" for beef production. Our cows will have access to fresh pasture, mineral tubs, and natural behavior for the length of their life. They will experience only "one bad day", by utilizing ODA approved mobile butchers that perform on-farm slaughter separate from the rest of the herd. BamBam joins us alongside two Devon cows bred with a Dexter, which will serve as the foundation of our beef program. Eventually, our farm will operate on a "birth to butcher" model, keeping cows on farm from the moment they are born to the moment they are killed.

Harper will be our personal family milk cow, and will be bred to our AMD bull Luke for spring 2025 calving. She is already a "dual-purpose" cow, in that she is a mix of a high milk production Jersey and a beef-centric Shorthorn. She will serve as the foundation for our other focus for our breeding program, producing "homestead cows". Mixing her with a heritage tri-purpose AMD will hopefully produce a cow that can be milked, raised for beef, and have the docility of an old-world oxen.

"Six years ago I was faced with 30 acres of Fir trees and 30 acres of Oak woodlands that were very unhealthy after decades of not being managed. The sheer volume of thinning and fuels reduction work I was facing to restore these woodlands was overwhelming for me with my chainsaw and tractor. I was very blessed to find Paul Catino! Paul not only possessed the physical ability to help with this project, it quickly became clear that his knowledge of the ecosystem was critical for me to reach my land restoration goals. Paul's approach to eco-friendly land management and his assistance with fuels reduction, thinning recommendations and completion, oak woodland restoration, replanting recommendations and planting assistance has been invaluable. As I transition into silvopasture, Paul continues to provide valuable insight to help me achieve my forest product and forage management goals. The land, forest and my family say thank you for six years of guidance and assistance. We couldn't have done it without Paul Catino!"
